Sonam Returns to Strobilus Arts on April 28th

Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church announces the return of Sonam (Singers of New and Ancient Music) to the Strobilus Arts series. At 3:00 on Saturday, April 28, this Durham-based choral group presents a program on the theme of refuge: exile, escape, and home. They will perform works by composers from the Renaissance to the modern era, drawing from Biblical and contemporary texts.
 
Andrew Taylor-Troutman, pastor of Chapel in the Pines, describes the church’s commitment to hosting performances like this one. "Strobilus Arts is a valuable enrichment resource for our congregation, but we also view the program as an ideal opportunity to welcome the greater community into our home as neighbors and friends, and share these incredible experiences of the arts."
 
Admission to this concert is free with a suggested donation of $10. In keeping with the theme of the concert, Sonam will donate its proceeds to the Refugee Support Center in Carrboro, a community nonprofit that provides services to and develops the self-sufficiency of refugees living in Orange County.
 
“We are thrilled to have Sonam return for their fourth concert with Strobilus in four years,” says Nathan Kotecki, Strobilus Arts coordinator. “Their artistry is breathtaking, and it is equally inspiring to know that they use their exceptional talents to support local nonprofits.”

The music series takes its name from the botanical term for the pinecone, which derives from the Greek strobilos, meaning whirlwind.
