Stone Soup Theatre Company is gearing up for its production of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," which opens on Friday, June 13th. Interestingly, the company will feature performances with both an adult and a teen cast, which is a great way to spread the theatre love to all ages.
We were lucky enough to score an interview with Blythe Meyer, who plays "Snoopy" in the adult cast and who is no stranger to the show itself. Here, we go in-depth with her with five key questions. What would you like viewers to know about this show or what should they know before coming to see it? Blythe understands that the show, written in 1967, has a few years on it, but she's still adamant that its themes and messages are relevant today. She says, "I want viewers to know that while the show is very old and about children, the themes feel very current and appropriate for humans at every stage of existence." She goes on to elaborate on some of those timeless, relatable themes, stating that, "Procrastinating on something you have to get done, coming to a realization that you’ve been really crabby to the people around you, and paying attention to the small reliefs in our lives are all universally human things Charles Schulz (the creator of Charlie Brown) explored in his comics that are present in this show." I hear this is your first time playing "Snoopy," but your third time performing in the show. Can you tell us a little bit about your past experiences with the show? Blythe elaborated on her history with the show, telling us that, "Many, many years ago when I was a teenager, I played Lucy Van Pelt TWICE!" She also says that she's known and loved the show for a very long time and that, "It was so much fun to play Lucy when I was younger, as she’s a character who’s really envisioning her future and goals for life. I think that Snoopy is the perfect fit for me now- all I want to do is sleep, daydream and eat!" What are some unique challenges you've faced in playing "Snoopy" that you didn't face with your other roles? Blythe tells us that the "biggest challenge with doing Snoopy justice is being willing to take up all of the space and pretend like I have never encountered the concept of shame." She also commented on just what it is that makes her character so very funny, describing him as "hilarious" because "he simultaneously has no job or responsibilities and also a vastly rich inner world where he is an astronaut, world famous baseball player, and WWI flying ace." Who is your favorite Peanuts character and why? This was probably our favorite question and the one we were most excited to get an answer to . . . and Blythe did not disappoint. She picked Lucy, who she says will always hold a "special place" in her heart, "because Lucy is incapable of pretending to feel any way other than how she actually feels." She goes on to say that this trait is "a beautiful and messy thing that we lose fairly early on as we start to understand how to move through the world. " In relation to this production, what are you most excited for? Blythe has definitely gotten us excited for the show, but as for what she's most thrilled about, she says, "I am SO excited to perform with live music- both other times I was in the show we sang to track. The music brings such a huge component to your ability to act because you and the musicians are deciding when to take beats together." She's also can't wait for us to see the hard work and dedication that she and her castmates have put into the show, noting, "I have a huge respect for my castmates, and I’m honored to share the stage with them. I hope people will consider coming to see both the adult and teen casts because the teens are doing a fantastic job!" Opening night will be here before we know it, and we're definitely pumped. As for Blythe, she encourages viewers to "come laugh, feel seen, and get a little teary eyed at what it means to be a person!" We can't wait to do exactly that, and we hope our readers will too.
